CURRICULUM
VITAE Name:
Kees Breedijk.
Nationality:
The Netherlands.
Age: 54
years.
Profession:
Fully Qualified Yachtcaptain.

It is probably beacause
my father was an officer in the dutch
merchant navy that ever since I was
a kid,
I was interested in boats and the seamanslife.
My first boat was a canoo and from that
moment on I soon got involved in sailing.I
learned how to handle small boats on
the lakes around Rotterdam where I lived
and sailed later bigger sailing boats
in the south of Holland and Zeeland
on open waters and the sea. Although
I wanted to become a sailor I eventually
went to the university where I got a
degree in Sociology and communication.
But somehow I could not resist the sirens
of the sea and I accepted an offer to
work on a fishing boat for two years.
I learned all the ins and outs of seamanship,
the secrets of the sea and the skills
of navigation. After this period, which
was physically quite heavy, I got involved
in radio-and television journalistics
and started a long career in the Dutch
media world, where I was quite successfull.
Nevertheless, the sea was always in
my mind and that is why I finally bought
a 9 meter motorsailer, designed by De
Vries Lentsch with which I had many
sailing adventures on my trips to Belgium,
France and England.
After I made a serie of radioprogrammes
about the world of yachting, I was offered
a job as a captain of a 17 meter schooner
at a sailtraining project in Rotterdam.
I got my final nautical education on
board the well known trainingschooner
"Eendracht" and I worked with
the project for about three years, where
I also did the co-ordination of all
the training aspects.
For this work, I was honoured by the
Dutch Shipping Inspection with a certificate
of competency as a captain on seagoing
sailingships with passengers, up to
300 tons.
Ever since that time, I have been sailing
around in the sailingseason: I worked
as a sailing instructor, I gave crewtraining,
sailed charterboats with passengers,
delivered boats and had my oceancrossing.
I was involved in refit-management,
I worked with a yacht-architect and
wrote articles for a sailing monthly
in the Netherlands. I did not only work
with sailingboats, but also with motoryachts,
fishing boats and even I worked some
time on a tugboat as a mate.
Until recently, I worked in the wintertime
in Holland as a free-lance director
for radio and television and in the
sailingseason in the Mediterranean as
a captain on different boats. Now I
live permanently on the island of Mallorca.
I am working in the yachting world for
more than 13 years now, and I never
had any damage with a boat under my
command. I have a good reputation in
this yachting world, a large network
of contacts and I still love the work.
I also speak different languages: Dutch,
English, German, French and I have a
working knowledge of Spanish.
